FROM READER TO WRITER

I like reading period, but when did I realized I should write? Well, not long ago. Although the answer was in me since I was a child. I loved to write for myself. I remember that I had to write a notebook full of poems. I was only 13 years old. I would get home and all I thought about was my poetry assignment. I closed my bedroom door and started writing. Some days were easier than others. My mother had this thick poetry book, and I read it for hours and hours to get inspired. I was a shy girl but I could express my feelings through my writing. Writing is not difficult, you just have to find whatever makes your heart content. Analyze yourself for a moment and think about those things that makes you cry, laugh or happy and put it on the paper. The most authentic feelings are those that come from inside your soul. Think about your past or you goals, your dreams and your sorrows. Writing is a good exercise for your mind and for your soul. Try it, you well feel much better after.

I FINISHED THE BOOK!!

I finished reading Shanghai Girls. Definitely a very moving book. Original in all ways. Having sisters myself, I felt the strong bond between the characters of the book. The information of the events before the war are horrendous. It is a sad, and extremely emotive book, but it is worth to read.
In a totally different note, I wanted to tell you how impressed I was with the revolution that has caused Diary of a Wimpy Kid , not only for my own kids but for a lot of children. I went to the Bookstore the day the latest book was released, and it was amazing how mostly of the kids had that yellow book in their hands. No wonder the books have been on The New York Times Best Seller List for lost of weeks. I have read parts of the books when I found out that they are part of the accelerated reader program at the school. Remember what I told you about connecting with the kids? Definitely the author connected with the mind of the children. Now comes the movie of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The whole 5Th grade class in my child’s school is going. Well what a success! Great for the author Jeff Kinney. You should find some time to read more about the author, it is very interesting.

BOOKS & LIFE

I just got home. It was a busy and interesting day. I am ready to spend some time with my kids. They had a busy day at school as well . The dinner will be ready soon and after reading with my little one, I am ready to go back to my creative self. I am also reading “Shanghai Girls” a novel by Lisa See. Shanghai Girls is an extremely powerful story about women, sisterhood, and starting a new life in a new land. The story can touch us in so many levels. I will be writing a complete review when I finish the book.
Sometimes is hard to balance all responsibilities but at the end of the day it feels so rewarding that I go to sleep happy and amazed with all that is been accomplished although tomorrow we start all over again with new and exiting adventures (just like the book I am reading). That’s the way I like to see my life, like a chapter of a book. I just can’t wait to turn the page..

WRITING A CHILDREN'S BOOK: HOW TO GET STARTED?

First of all you have to read, read and read piles of children’s books. Try to look for those books in the age group you have picked . Read the book thinking like a child, you have to feel what they feel. Be around kids and see what makes them giggle , what makes them sad. You cannot write to children if you write as an adult. That would be boring!
Another good exercise is to used your memory. Go back in time and think of your own experiences or perhaps your best friend’s. It is known that you can remember only the episodes of great happiness or great sadness. Things and places that changed your life and made a big impact. Think about the way you felt at that moment in your life. What would you change if you had the power of doing it?
Now grab a piece of paper, and star writing about those experiences. What seems interesting and appealing? Try to talk about them to a group of kids. Can you get some attention? Yes? Good for you, that’s a start! No? Try again! Maybe if you introduce a bit of “fiction” works better for you.
Put your memory at work, open your imagination and let it run!.

READ & WRITE!

My love for writing was lost in time. What do I want to say? Well, it is complicated. Since I was in High school I new that I could write. It was in me, but only in the inside. I always was the one helping my sisters writing for school projects (I even won an award in my sister Literature class! The sad part is, I didn’t get credit for it). I was the one chosen to write for the local newspaper or that greeting card for that aunt that lived far away.I ended up studying Accounting. It was in my late 30’s that I started analyzing my life, what I have accomplished and also my future goals, when I realized that I wanted to write.I started reading my children's books . I discover how fascinating is the children’s literature. The imagination of a child does not have limits, it does not recognized the impossible, and that is exactly what I love about them. We grow up and we start seeing walls where there was any.
Read and write go together. That is how I want to keep it.
Share a book, I’ll share one with you!
